The ability to depict an object literally doesn’t make you an artist. No one ever claimed that the faithful duplication of nature (an impossible rask anyway) produces art. But the ability to draw things as you see them is the first step toward becoming an artist. (“How to draw what u see (Practical Art Books)” Rudy De Reyna)

Drawing has taught me many things, among which the fact that a person is a complex being that holds inside many treasures. Some of them are very well hidden, so deeply that, when they come out, they surprise everybody. I would say that every person is a Pandora’s Box filled with mysteries and that we all should search inside, find our talents and passions and develop them, for in them we will find extreme joy.
I started drawing a few years ago and it has soon become a way to detach myself from all the chaos of the modern life. All of a sudden, the world started revealing itself to me as a combination of light and shades. No matter what, where there is a shadow there is also light. For me it is an optimistic way to see and understand life.

I am happy with what my box offered me, and my friends’ reactions, when seeing my new drawings, has become the best reward for my work.

Hi there, i recently picked up interest on charcoal drawings and black & grey arts.
You have great control on lightings and shading, ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL work!
    2 thumbs up for you!

As i’m still very fresh to this art, i don’t really understand what are the kinds of materials you use. Mainly, is charcoal pencil same as your graphite pencil? What is a graphite pencil? And what do i need to start off as a learner?
Hope you can post up more of you WONDERFUL works as well as tutorials.
You inspire others with your works ;)

    Thanks much!

Thanks Brandon for your appreciation and feedback (:
So, to answer you to the question: the graphite pencil is the usual pencil that you use it for sketching. There are 2 tipes of graphite pencils: woodless graphite pencils and wood-cased pencils. Your charcoal pencil is something else. Usually it is used to give deep dark effects.
What u need to start off? Just a wish ;) grab the pencil and start to draw. I hope I’ll make soon a tutorial about other different materials that can be used in a graphite drawing :)
Thanks again! Have a great day!

    Hi Julia,
Great site & so easy to navigate, Your work is amazing. Thanks to DTO i found you. Could you please give an insite as to why you use graphite & mechanical pencils. Also if you don’t mind where did you learn. . . . Truly amazing. 2b or not 2b :-)

  9. jullia says:

    Thanks David!
Mechanical pencils are very good for details.. but I use both woodcast pencils and mechanical pencils. I learn by my self, just watching other people’s work and wishing to be able to do that too. The paper itself is a great teacher ;) Anyway there are a lot of things to learn, that’s why I joined too DTO. So.. 2B :D said Hamlet to Ophelia

  10. David Allebone says:

Thank you Julia, 2B was just a little play on words, as in the pencil grade. And after all ART IS ART, :-)
